Kickstart My Heart

Yesterday, I received my copy of Carcosa by Geoffrey McKinney in the mail.  But that wasn’t all – I also received Matt Forbeck’s first 12 for ’12 novel,  Brave New World Revolution.

Matt has launched 3 kickstarter projects so far, working toward his goal of writing 12 novels in 2012.  That’s a crazy plan, but from what I know about him, he’s the guy who can pull it off.  I don’t know Matt Forbeck well, but we have some mutual friends and I’ve run into him at GenCon a few times (usually at 3:00 AM) and we were part of the same True Dungeon group last year, so even from our few interactions, I know he’s a guy who keeps busy and churns out solid work.  This book is based on his Brave New World RPG setting from AEG, and was the first Kickstarter project that I ever backed.

I’ve since found several projects that have claimed my interest and hopefully my money.  To me, it’s like paying in advance for Christmas – the goal is met, the money comes out, and months later, after it’s drifted from my mind, a package shows up in the mail.  I had already received a ebook copy of Brave New World Revolution, so it was a nice surprise to get the hardcover copy in the mail.

Other projects that I’m backing include:

Matt Forbeck’s 3rd trilogy in his 12 for Twelve project, set at GenCon, of course!

Mike Nystul’s infinite dungeon, a mega-dungeon project which now includes its own RPG rules as part of a stretch goal.

Hydra Dice – ’cause you can never have enough crazy dice.  These look super cool, and it’s just about having rare stuff at the gaming table.

I’m also supporting a few other RPG projects, some iOS software, a few novels, web tv shows, and a text book.  It is kind of addictive, and it’s nice to know that the money is going to help these creative projects get off the ground.

I’m sure I’ll be sharing more kickstarter projects in the future.  For now, I’m off to read my new book.
